Interview with W. Erle White concerning his experiences as founder of White's Auto Stores. White discusses his family background, early work experiences, and education, as well as his work in auto supply stores and garages, and starting his own business in Clinton, Oklahoma during the Depression. He also talks about locating the home office in Wichita Falls, Texas, the expansion and growth of the business through franchising and company-owned stores, and the diversification of merchandise lines in auto stores. White shares his views concerning the effects of growth on organizational structure, employee relations, unions, and family-operated businesses. In addition, he speaks of his selling out to Household Finance in 1969, his other business interests with Mercantile Credit Corporation, Beacon National Insurance Company, Eureka Life Insurance Company, White Fuel Corporation, and ranching.
